CBC Ten Commandments Memorization Challenge | Week 1

As we walk through the Ten Commandments in our Sunday morning sermons, we’re doing a Scripture memory challenge! We’re going to memorize all of Exodus 20.1-17 by the end of the series (early October).

Here’s how it will work.

  • After each Sunday’s sermon, we’ll memorize the commandment that was just preached before the following Sunday.

  • For example, Pastor Josh preached the first commandment on Aug 9. So, we’re all going to memorize vv 1-3 by the next Sunday, Aug 16.

  • Then, after he preaches the second commandment on Aug 16, we’ll memorize vv 4-6 by Sunday, Aug 23.

  • And so it will continue until we finish the sermon series.

Some of you may think that you can’t memorize that much Scripture. But if you give it the time it needs, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you can memorize. Many in our church regularly memorize Scripture, and I’m sure they’d be glad to share what has worked for them. Feel free to ask anyone for help.

Lastly, I would strongly encourage you to pick 2-3 other people to do this with you. Doing it alone lowers your chances of staying consistent. At the same time, by asking others, you may get some involved who would not have done this otherwise. Who are those 2-3 people?

Below you’ll find an optional plan for memorizing Exod 20.1-17. I hope it can be helpful.

More than anything, church family, this is not a Scripture memory challenge for its own sake. This is about communion with your God. One of the best and most tangible ways to walk closely with the Lord is to hide his word in your heart. Why? Because when the words of Scripture begin to saturate your heart and mind, you literally begin thinking like God thinks. Scripture memory rewires our brains to think like God thinks. It tunes our hearts to love what God loves.
